Typography and layout on your website

January 26, 2015 by in category News, Website Design with 0 and 0

When it comes to website design, it is not only important to have excellent content, but also to choose the right fonts and typefaces to display that content. Different typefaces and layouts can produce different reactions in the viewer and can even make the difference between them staying on your site and going on to becoming a customer, or immediately leaving and never coming back.

There are many thousands of typefaces to choose from, including both serif and non-serif varieties. Each typeface will produce a different reaction so it’s important to select an appropriate one for your site. Serif fonts generally provide a more traditional, formal impression while sans serif ones convey a simple, minimal and contemporary vibe. The spacing between lines and letters (leading and kerning) should be considered as you do not want website text to look crowded and cramped.

As well as fonts, the layout of the text is extremely important in order to make the content as clear and legible as possible. If someone is faced with a huge wall of text, they are not going to want to read it. Instead, content should be laid out in a clear way, allowing people to quickly locate the information they need.

White space plays a vital role in web design, providing a visual resting place and making it easier for viewers to take in the written content. There is no need to fill every spare inch of the site with graphics and content; in fact, this may actually put website visitors off. Professionalism, organisation and simplicity are more likely to retain attention.

Content should be kept concise and clear so viewers do not have to wade through thousands of words to find the information they need. There is a balance between including all the necessary information and overloading a page with text, and our designers and writers know how to strike this balance.

Our team of web designers can ensure that your website has maximum appeal for your viewers and can help you to optimise your chances of getting and keeping their attention, no matter what kind of business you are involved in.
