What to consider when designing a website

October 8, 2014 by in category News with 0 and 0

It’s essential that your website is both attractive and highly functional. Many websites fall into the category of having a website which looks impressive, but is difficult to navigate, or having a website which can be used with ease but is visually unappealing. The best websites strike the perfect balance of simplicity and visual appeal.

One of the most important things to think about is the graphical impact of the website. Navigational buttons should be clear and not cluttered. Your site shouldn’t be dominated by large amounts of content. Smaller pieces of well written content are more than enough for your website to explain your company, your services and your goals. Colour combinations need to be carefully considered to ensure that everything is clear and legible. Likewise, don’t go overboard with fancy fonts: simple fonts are easy to read and look professional.

The best test of a well-designed page is to measure how long it takes to load. Websites choked with GIF images, unnecessary widgets and a myriad of design features will take far too long to load. Websites which have been streamlined will load much quicker than their competitor. All you really need is social media integration and a few other features to augment the experience of the website.

Graphically, everyone has different tastes and these will differ depending on your company, what you offer, and who your target audience is. However, it’s a great idea to have a clear logo. Use graphics that are relevant to your company, preferably ones of the company or relating to the company and its brand image. Graphical consistency is also important: in most cases, it’s a good idea to ensure every page has elements which remain consistent across the site, such as the header and the navigation bar. You could also consider customising everything that you can in a way that fits your site, even pop-up forms and buttons. This will give your site a professional and aesthetic edge.

As we have mentioned on other blog posts, it’s vital to consider mobile devices when it comes to designing your website. A mobile-friendly version of your website should be in place, or else you risk alienating potential visitors.

There is a lot to be considered when you’re aiming for striking web design, but help is at hand. Our talented web design team can ensure that your site not only looks amazing, but that it will keep your visitors coming back again and again.
